Frosty the Shih Tzu

About Frosty

IMPORTANT NOTE: Born blind, we sought advice from a Vetenarian who is also an Canine and Feline Behaviourist.

Frosty, male, white with black patches on tail and head. Frosty is an 11-week-old male special-needs Shih Tzu puppy. He was born blind, or nearly so, Rosie will have him evaluated soon to see if there is any sight or any chance to improve his sight. He is playful and affectionate and adorable, as you would expect. Just given his size (about one kilo right now and only about 8 cm tall) he is fragile and needs particular care as he cannot see dangers in his way. His family will have to always be vigilant about keeping his path in their home clear and predictable, now and always, because he will learn his home well and navigate it expertly, as long as it is safe and free of unexpected obstacles or dangers. For instance, stairs will have to be blocked, and given his tiny size, even railings should be blocked as he can easily fit through and have a dangerous fall. A potential family needs to see their home from his perspective to evaluate if their home is a match for Frosty. Frosty should also ideally have another dog with him to guide him and teach him but also one who is well adjusted and sociable and patient. Frosty is a pup who wants to play and bite a bit, will bump into your dog and he’ll also want to cuddle your dog. A blind dog can seem daunting and a family should take his care seriously, but a blind dog is also blind to their shortcomings and will enjoy life fully and explore and be as brave as his environment is safe.
If you feel you have a home and family life suitable for Frosty, let us know.

UPDATE: Frost has been examined by an eye specialist. He can see some light. He is blind as optic nerve did not grow. Frosty needs a well balanced dog under 5 yrs old his new home. He will need to be seen again in 2 months.

Frosty’s adoption fee is $750. $200. Will be reimbursed following neuter at 5 months without exception.

Surrenders

Here at Rosie Animal Adoption, we understand that the decision to give up a family pet is not always an easy one and that the dog's best interests are always of paramount importance. Whether you have a family pet or a stray to surrender, please be aware that there are many unscrupulous people who are always on the lookout for unaltered dogs to breed strictly for profit. Dogs kept for this purpose, be it by a “backyard breeder” or “puppy miller,” are usually kept in inhumane conditions that are worse than you can imagine. We get many calls from people who are “in a hurry” to re-home their dogs, claiming that they simply cannot wait. With the increasing number of homeless dogs in the province of Quebec , our resources are always stretched to the limit and we do not always have immediate openings. We would ask that you please be patient when contacting our volunteers to surrender a dog.

We will do our best to help you as quickly as we can, and may also be able to refer you to another group that we are affiliated with, but the most important message here is to proceed very cautiously if you are giving away or selling your dog to someone who may be portraying a private individual. The best thing you can do is to be sure to have your pet spayed or neutered and the worse thing you can do is offer an unaltered pet “free to a good home.” We have seen what can happen.
